What it means
A trailer dealer describes the dry van as "an enclosed, non-refrigerated box trailer" that comes in several standard lengths, "with 53-foot dry vans being the most common on U.S. highways," and lists a 53-footer at about 630 in. long, about 100 in. wide and 108 to 110 in. tall inside.[1] A fleet spec for 48- and 53-ft vans gives 101 in. of inside width and 110 in. of inside height.[2]
Outside, domestic vans are built to the 102-inch width that federal rules protect on the National Network.[3] That extra width over an 8-ft container is what lets two 48 x 40 pallets sit side by side turned; the pallet counts are in container vs. trailer capacity.
