Street Turn
Definition
A street turn is reusing an empty import container for an export load without first returning it to the terminal.
What it means
It saves an empty return and a separate empty pickup, but it needs the equipment provider's approval. The Intermodal Association of North America runs a Street Interchange Application that documents the transfer electronically and, in its words, "stops the clock on the import move and begins it on the export move for street turns."[1]
It only works when the empty is clean, undamaged and the right type for the export. The fees and the approval steps are in chassis split, pre-pull and street turn fees.
