Shifted vs. Settled: How to Tell the Difference
Freight compacts slightly and evenly across the whole stack during transit — a small, uniform reduction in stack height with no leaning, no gaps, and no change in trailer handling.
Pallets have moved from their original position — visible leaning, gaps opening between rows, weight concentrated unevenly to one side or the nose of the trailer, or a stack that's no longer square to the walls.
What Actually Causes a Load to Shift
- Uneven weight distribution at loading — heavier pallets stacked without accounting for how weight settles under motion.
- Weak or damaged pallets — a cracked stringer or broken deck board gives way under the stack above it.
